Sojourn Collegiate Ministry, led by Tim Hawkins, has a clear mission: to help college and university students in Boston find their way back to God. Special attention is given to preparing leaders for small community groups enabling multiple opportunities for individuals to meet during the week throughout the city. The ultimate vision of Sojourn is a network of college and university students in Boston integrating academic life with faith, community, and generosity.
The Sojourn staff is continually blessed by the transformation taking place within the lives of the students. Jesus modeled a life of accessibility and meeting individuals where they are, so the staff disciples students who bring their unchurched friends to activities, community groups, and church. Minish, a Hindu from India, came to church a few weeks ago with David who became a part of a community group last fall. Nearly 50 students participated in the ministry this last semester in community groups and "network events" which welcome all students.
Later this summer, the Hawkins family will be moving to another house in Somerville closer to the subway station (the cheapest means of transportation in Boston and better access for students). One of the barriers to any ministry in Boston is the cost of living, especially in the area of houses and facilities. Like other places, the Hawkins home becomes a place of ministry, outreach and hospitality. In many ways their home becomes a mission center. This summer the Hawkins have had a great opportunity to connect to the community in Somerville through youth sports and look forward to a continual investment in the community as well as with the population of students living in the area.
