English as a Second Language (ESL)

Whether it is English as a Second Language (ESL), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), it all means the same thing: the need to teach the English language. The secret is no longer a secret. America is virtually bursting at the seams in every major city as well as rural communities with immigrant groups. The world is literally coming to our door.

The reasons for the immigrants coming are diverse. But regardless of the reasons, their coming provides an opportunity for Americans to befriend someone and help assimilate them into this new culture. And what better way of helping them to assimilate than by helping them to learn English. Teaching English to those who do not speak English is as simple as teaching your son or daughter how to tie a shoe, ride a bike, or bake cookies.

Public schools and colleges are not the only places that are in need of English teachers and tutors. Many communities are stepping out and offering English classes for individuals seeking to learn English or fine tune their speaking abilities.

And the church (and parachurch organizations like Restoration House Ministries) is realizing this awesome opportunity as well. Here the focus shifts to include meeting spiritual needs. For Christians, teaching English allows us to befriend those that are isolated and lonely and help bring them into a community of caring people.

That is why Restoration House Ministries is using ESL--ESL is opening doors for ministry. Currently three Lincoln Christian College graduates are teaching in the ESL program at the Nashua, NH, School District. They are Andrea Andris, Angela Clymer, and Donnetta Kiifner. Additionally, Nanette Dawson teaches English to Chinese students at Manchester, NH, Christian Church.

Other programs are under consideration. For additional information, contact Dan Clymer, Executive Director, at dclymer@rhmnewengland.org or call him at 603.668.8808.
